Heat, humidity and a face mask are hard on eye makeup. A pencil is the easiest to control and the quickest to smudge; a gel sits between the two; a liquid liner gives the sharpest line and the least forgiveness. If you walk to work, a formula described as long wearing or water resistant is the one to reach for.
Primer or powder on the lid first gives shadow something to hold on to, which matters more in August than in January.
For a work face, one brown or black pencil and a coat of mascara is the whole job. For an evening, build the line thicker at the outer third and add a warm shadow — browns, bronzes and coppers sit well against warm brown skin.
